Important Notice
Bike Karma
Bike Karma Inc., its directors, officers, employees, contractors, volunteers, agents, technology partners, successors and assigns — the company that operates the Bike Karma platform, website, and mobile application.
Community Host
Any individual, group, organization, non-profit, or business that organizes or leads an event or adventure listed on the Bike Karma platform, including but not limited to volunteer ride leaders, cycling clubs, outdoor guides, and partner organizations such as HUB Cycling, BC Cycling Coalition, and similar entities.
Releasees
Bike Karma AND the Community Host of any event you register for, collectively.
You / Participant
The adult individual (19 years of age or older) who is agreeing to these terms by registering for or participating in any event on the Bike Karma platform.
Adventure Activities means all activities, events, experiences, or services organized, facilitated, promoted, or made available through the Bike Karma platform, including but not limited to: Road cycling and gravel cycling; Mountain biking and urban cycling; Hiking and trail walking; Open water swimming (lakes, rivers, ocean, harbours); Social events, coffee rides, and multi-activity group experiences; Any combination of the above ("multi-sport adventures"); All related travel, transit between activity segments, and use of parks, trails, and public or private land.
Part B — Plain Language Summary
We believe in being upfront with our community. Here is what this agreement means in plain terms:
What you're agreeing to
You're confirming that you understand outdoor adventures carry real risks — weather changes, falls, terrain hazards, open water conditions, and the actions of other people. You're agreeing not to hold Bike Karma or your Community Host legally responsible if something goes wrong, even if it happens due to their negligence.
Why we ask for this
Bike Karma is a community-first platform. Our hosts are mostly volunteers and local organizations who love the outdoors. Without this protection, a single legal claim could shut down the entire community. This agreement protects the people who make these adventures possible.
What this does NOT do
This agreement does not waive your rights in cases of gross negligence, intentional misconduct, or criminal acts. It also does not waive rights that cannot be waived under BC law.
Part C — Safety Acknowledgements
I confirm that:

Helmet Compliance
I have been advised to wear a properly fitted, approved safety helmet (meeting CSA, ANSI, Snell, or ASTM standards) when participating in any cycling activity, and I agree to comply.

Laws and Regulations
I will comply with all applicable provincial and municipal road laws, trail regulations, park bylaws, and water safety regulations during any Adventure Activity.

Personal Fitness Assessment
I will honestly assess my own physical fitness, skill level, and health before participating in any event, and I will not participate in activities beyond my ability.

Medical Disclosure
I will inform the Community Host of any relevant medical conditions, injuries, or physical limitations prior to the event.

Personal Responsibility
I understand that Bike Karma and Community Hosts are not professional safety supervisors and that I am ultimately responsible for my own safety.
Part D — Assumption of Risks
I understand and acknowledge that Adventure Activities involve inherent risks, dangers, and hazards. These include, but are not limited to:
Cycling (Road & Gravel)
  • Loose gravel, potholes, railway tracks, curbs, roots, and uneven road surfaces
  • Steep descents and rapid or uncontrolled acceleration
  • Mechanical failure of bicycles or equipment
  • Collisions with motor vehicles, pedestrians, animals, or other cyclists
  • Slippery surfaces in wet or icy conditions
  • Loss of control or inability to control speed or direction
Open Water Swimming
  • Drowning and submersion risks
  • Cold water shock and hypothermia, including in water temperatures of 15°C or below, which are immediately life-threatening
  • Unpredictable currents, tides, rip currents, and undertows
  • Limited visibility in murky or dark water
  • Exhaustion, dehydration, and cardiovascular stress
  • Distance from immediate medical assistance
  • Submerged rocks, debris, vegetation, and aquatic hazards
  • Blue-green algae blooms and water quality hazards
Hiking & Trail Walking
  • Uneven, steep, or slippery trail surfaces
  • Rockfall, loose scree, and unstable terrain
  • Exposure to extreme weather, sun, wind, rain, or cold
  • Getting lost or disoriented on trails
  • Encounters with wildlife

All Activities
  • Negligence on the part of the Releasees, including failure to take reasonable steps to safeguard or protect me
  • The actions or negligence of other participants
  • Failure of equipment, technology, navigation tools, or digital route guidance
  • Infectious diseases contracted through viruses, bacteria, parasites, or fungi transmitted through direct or indirect contact
  • Emotional distress or psychological harm resulting from witnessing an accident or emergency
  • Encounters with domestic or wild animals
Part E — Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, and Indemnity
In consideration of the Releasees permitting my participation in Adventure Activities through the Bike Karma platform, and for other good and valuable consideration (the receipt and sufficiency of which I acknowledge), I agree as follows:

Waiver and Release
I waive any and all claims — present and future — that I have or may have against the Releasees. I release the Releasees from any and all liability for any loss, damage, expense, or injury, including death, that I may suffer or that my next of kin may suffer as a result of my participation in Adventure Activities, due to any cause whatsoever, including but not limited to: Negligence; Breach of contract; Breach of any statutory or other duty of care, including any duty of care owed under the Occupiers Liability Act, RSBC 1996, c. 337.

Indemnity
I agree to hold harmless and indemnify the Releasees for any and all liability, property damage, loss, or personal injury to any third party resulting from my participation in Adventure Activities.

Platform Liability
I acknowledge that Bike Karma operates as a technology platform that facilitates connections between Community Hosts and Participants. Bike Karma does not organize, lead, supervise, or operate Adventure Activities directly. We are not a professional guide service. Our hosts are volunteers sharing their favourite routes, not certified safety supervisors. If you want a hand-held tour, hire a professional outfitter. If you want grassroots community adventures, you're in the right place. Bike Karma is not directly responsible for the actions, omissions, or negligence of Community Hosts but we do our best to ensure that our hosts are thoroughly vetted before they're allowed to host/co-host adventures on our platform.

Binding on Heirs
This agreement is effective and binding upon my heirs, next of kin, executors, administrators, assigns, and personal representatives in the event of my death or incapacity.

Governing Law
This agreement and any rights, duties, and obligations between the parties shall be governed by and interpreted solely in accordance with the laws of the Province of British Columbia. Any litigation shall be brought solely within the Province of British Columbia and within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of British Columbia.

Severability
If any provision of this agreement is found to be unenforceable or invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.
Part F — Health and Emergency Information
I confirm that:
Physical Health
I am in sufficient physical health to participate in the Adventure Activity I am registering for.
Medical Conditions
I am not aware of any medical condition that would make my participation inadvisable, or if I am, I have disclosed this to the Community Host.
Emergency Contact
I have provided accurate emergency contact information through my Bike Karma profile.
Emergency Medical Treatment
I consent to emergency medical treatment being sought on my behalf if I am incapacitated and unable to consent for myself during an Adventure Activity.
Part G — Media and Photography Consent
We love hyping up the community, here's what we ask permission for, and how to opt out if you're camera-shy. I understand and agree that:
Photography & Video
Community Hosts and Bike Karma staff or representatives may take photographs and/or video recordings during Adventure Activities for purposes including but not limited to: event safety documentation, community highlights, social media, marketing materials, and app content.
Licence Grant
I grant Bike Karma and the Community Host a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to use my likeness in such photographs and videos for the above purposes.
Waiver of Approval Rights
I waive any right to inspect or approve such materials prior to use and any right to compensation for such use.
Part H — Data Collection and Privacy Consent
I understand and consent to the following data practices by Bike Karma, in compliance with British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA):
How Is Data Protected
All personal data is stored with industry-standard encryption (e.g., encryption at rest and in transit). Health and biometric data is treated as sensitive personal information and is never sold or shared with third parties for commercial purposes.
What is Collected
  • GPS location and route data during activities
  • Ride statistics (distance, speed, elevation, duration)
  • Health and biometric data from connected wearable devices (heart rate, cadence, calories, etc.)
  • Profile information and event history
How It Is Used
  • To provide core app functionality (route tracking, ride summaries, event participation history)
  • To improve platform safety features and route recommendations
  • In aggregated, de-identified form for community insights, advocacy and platform improvements

Part I — English Language
This agreement is made in the English language. In the event of any conflict between this English version and any translation, the English version shall prevail.
Part J — Parental / Guardian Consent for Minor Participants
This section applies ONLY if you are bringing a minor (under 19 years of age) who is not independently registered as a Bike Karma user. As the parent or legal guardian of the minor participant named below, I confirm and agree to the following:

Agreement on Behalf of Minor
I have read and agree to all terms in Parts A through I of this agreement on behalf of the minor.

Risk Assessment
I have assessed the risks of the Adventure Activity and determined that it is appropriate for the minor's age, ability, and physical condition.

Full Responsibility
I accept full responsibility for the minor's participation and safety throughout the Adventure Activity.
04
Release of Releasees
I hold harmless and release the Releasees from all liability for any injury, loss, or damage suffered by the minor during the Adventure Activity, to the fullest extent permitted by BC law.

BC Law Acknowledgement
I understand that in BC, the enforceability of waivers signed on behalf of minors may be limited, and I agree to this clause in good faith as an acknowledgement of the risks involved.

Emergency Medical Consent
I consent to emergency medical treatment being sought on behalf of the minor if they are injured and I am temporarily unreachable.
